Spotlight & #Giveaway for What a Devilsh Duke Desires by Vicky Dreiling

The Third full novel in the Sinful Scoundrel Series! Not to be missed! Harry and Lucy are adorable! See what happens when a Duke falls for a maid (although the maid is rather well bred ;) )  Published by Forever on February 24th!

WILL A FEW FLIRTATIOUS STEPS
Harry Norcliffe never wanted to inherit his beloved uncle's title. The rigidity of the ton, the incessant reminders from his marriage-minded mama that he must settle down with a highborn lady and produce an heir and a spare: it's all such a dreadful bore. So when his mother asks him to take part in a dancing competition, he patently refuses. The last thing he needs is another chore . . . until a beautiful, brilliant, delightfully tempting maid makes him rethink his position.

LEAD TO A SCANDALOUS SEDUCTION?
Most women would be over the moon to be pursued by a wickedly handsome-not to mention wealthy-duke like Norcliffe. But Lucy will not be any man's trophy. She could use a friend, though, and what begins innocently soon ignites into desire. As Lucy tries to resist Harry's scorching kisses, he makes an utterly irresistible offer. Enter the dance contest with him, and win a prize that could change her life forever . . . if falling in love doesn't change it first.

Lucy stood behind the table dressed in an apron. A cap covered all but one wisp of her red hair. She handed a glass of lemonade to a matron. When the lady walked away, Lucy lifted up on her toes. Evidently, she was watching the dancers.
He strolled over to her table. “Lucy?”
Her green eyes widened. “What are you doing here?” she said under her breath. A blush stole over her cheeks. “Sorry, that was foolish.”
“No, it wasn’t. I escorted my mother and cousins . . . I didn’t expect to see you here.”
She wouldn’t be here if she didn’t need the coin, but she couldn’t be earning more than a pittance.
“You are working?” he said. Brilliant, you just sounded like a complete idiot.
“Yes, isn’t it obvious?”
He smiled. “Well, yes. You are well?”
“I am,” she said. “And you?”
“A few minutes ago, I would have said tolerably well, but then I saw you and brightened considerably.”
“Flirting again, Your Grace?”
“Who me?” he said, putting his hand to his heart.
She looked over her shoulder and returned her gaze to him. “You had better go.”
He looked behind her.
“What are you about?” she said.
He grinned. “One of your curls escaped the cap.” She attempted to tuck it in.
“Don’t,” he said. “It’s rather fetching.”
“Please go. I cannot afford trouble.”
“No one is paying attention to us. May I have a glass of lemonade?”
“Of course.” She poured and handed the glass to him. He took a sip and puckered his mouth. “It’s terrible, but I should have expected it. Almack’s is well known for its lackluster refreshments.”
“One would think the ton would serve decent food and drink.”
“Believe me, no one comes here for the refreshments,” he said.
“Except you?” she said in a teasing tone.
He laughed. “I saw you watching the dancers. I wish you could dance with me.”
“I’m working.” She glanced over her shoulder again. “You had better leave before someone notices you’re talking to me.”
He glanced out at the crowd. “No one is paying the least bit of attention. Everyone is focused on the dancers.”
“Why aren’t you dancing?” she said.
“I would if you were free.”
“If you wish to flirt, I advise you to choose a lady of leisure. I must work.”
“I wish I could dance the rest of the night with you. I can’t, so I won’t dance at all.”
She shook her head. “I’m not the reason you’re avoiding dancing,” she said. “I know the patronesses changed the rules.”
“Yes, and I narrowly escaped dancing all night with a young lady out in her first season. I felt sorry for her. She couldn’t be a day over seventeen, making her much too young for the likes of me.”
Her eyes narrowed. “Aren’t you expected to dance?”
“I don’t care about expectations.”
She met his gaze straight on. “I wager your family does. I know courtships take place primarily on the dance floor.”
“When I decide to court a lady, I will choose the time and place. I make my own decisions, and I answer to no one,” he said.
She arched her brows. “Perhaps a higher power?”
He smiled. “Or a lower one.”
Her mouth twitched in a slight smile. “Does that make you a devilish duke?”
His shoulders shook with mirth. “Clever.”
A rotund maid walked out. “Lucy, give the gentleman a glass of lemonade and be done with it.”
Lucy winced and poured a glass. “Yes, Mrs. Thompson. I’m sorry.”
“It’s not me you owe an apology.” Mrs. Thompson regarded him. “She’s new, but that’s no excuse.”
He’d made trouble for Lucy, and he’d better undo the damage. “Mrs. Thompson, I beg your pardon.” Harry gave her his best flirtatious smile. “The lady did try to discourage me. I take all the blame. Do forgive me.”
Mrs. Thompson’s eyes grew as round as carriage wheels and her face turned pink. “Imagine me forgivin’ you. Carry on, Miss Longmore,” she said, and walked off.
Afterward, Lucy leaned toward him. “Please go now. I can’t risk losing my job.”
The devil. He shouldn’t have teased Lucy. Her words worried him, because she couldn’t be earning much. That only made him wonder how she was managing.
He wandered past the other tables, stopping occasionally to watch her. She and her grandmother lived in a rough neighborhood. That fact only increased his curiosity and his concern. Most likely, she held more than one job, because she couldn’t possibly survive on whatever pittance she earned serving lemonade.
When she caught him eyeing her, she averted her gaze. A lady approached, and Lucy served her a glass of lemonade. Afterward, Lucy looked out at the crowd as if determined to avoid him.
Once again, he was struck by the contradiction of her. He told himself to walk away and forget her, but he couldn’t. She was a riddle, one that he itched to solve, but that was not all. In truth, that one kiss had only made him want more. He wanted to pull her up to her toes and kiss her senseless. He wanted to hold her in his arms. He wanted her to surrender everything to him, but he mustn’t rush her. That one kiss had assured him she was an innocent.
The orchestra ended the tune with a flourish. The master of ceremonies called for silence. The guests moved closer en mass toward the dais where the patronesses sat.
Three ladies inside the refreshment room hurried out to join the throng. Harry consulted his watch. It was half past eleven. He turned around. Lucy was alone.
When he strode toward her, she eyed him warily. He set the half-finished glass of lemonade on the table and leaned closer to her.
“I want to see you again. Meet me at Green Park tomorrow.”
“Why?”
“Because I want to know more about you.”
She shook her head. “I do not think it is a good idea.”
“Who will know but us?” he said.
She narrowed her eyes. “What if one of your friends saw me with you? I can well imagine what they would think of me.”
“They’ll be at Rotten Row during the fashionable hour. No need to worry.”
A roar went up within the ballroom, followed by thunderous clapping. Harry turned around and saw his eldest cousin Mina and Lord Everleigh standing on the dais. “I had better go.”
“Yes, go, and please do not jeopardize my job again.”
He grinned. “I will see you tomorrow.”
“You’re awfully confident, but you are bound for disappointment.”
He looked at her over his shoulder, winked, and walked into the ballroom.

Jo's tired of keeping her feelings in a box Cam is afraid to open. If he wants her, he'll have to prove it. And if he doesn't, Jo will need to know the real reason why . . . . . .

become the love of a lifetime?

How do you walk away from your soul mate? Cam wishes he knew. No matter how far he runs from Jo, he can't resist looking back at the silver eyes that seem to see right through him. But as well as Jo thinks she understands Cam, the dark truth about his past is something she shouldn't have to handle. Cam's sure that setting Jo free is the right thing to do. Too bad his heart has other ideas . . .away...

My Review:

In the first two books, we never got Cam’s POV. What a difference that makes! I hated him, passionately. I could not see how Kennedy Ryan was going to make me like him. I knew he had a bad childhood. Sigh. Yeah. She managed to slowly lead me to the real Cam. Cam, the sarcastic, loving, protective man was shown in this book. Of course, he’s a man so he’s not perfect by a longshot and he’s made many mistakes, but for the right reasons.

Jo, I never really got a feel for her in the first two books. She was just someone who we all knew was in love with Cam and let him marry Kerris anyway. I realize now that she didn’t LET him do anything. She tried time after time to get him to see that she was there for him. He knew it but pushed her away…for 17 years. Only when she finally gave up and tried to move on did Cam wake up and smell the coffee!

This was a great read! It didn’t pull at my emotional strings as much as When You Are Mine or Loving You Always, though. There are times when it comes close but I still think When You Are Mine is my favorite. If you’ve read this one and not the others then please go back and read them. If you are just seeing this series, you NEED to read When You Are Mine first.

I could go deeper into the story but I want to keep it spoiler free. I would like to thank the publisher and Netgalley for giving me the opportunity to read this book.

“So you had a good time, huh?” Cam asked.

Jo caressed the gold leather of her shoe and trapped her bottom lip between her teeth for a moment before looking back at him.

“It was probably one of the best dates I’ve ever had.”

You asked, masochistic bastard.

“So you like this guy?”

“I like this guy a lot.”

Cam had no right to feel like a froth-mouthed rabid dog at the thought of some other man having Jo. He’d spent the last decade and a half doing everything in his power to convince her, without words, that they would never work.

Looked like she finally believed him.

And it was a stiletto twisting in his gut. Cutting through his good intentions. Slicing through flesh, tendon, sinew—until it reached the evil, selfish bone. He wanted to cut the gold confection right off Jo’s lean, curvy body. Snip it away from her lush ass and splay her on the desk. Spread her, eat her, consume her until she didn’t even know her name. Couldn’t even speak because pleasure stole her words, stole her breath, stole her reason. Show her what it really felt like to be possessed by a man who couldn’t keep his eyes off her, as hard as he’d always tried.

Who cared enough about her to keep his damn hands to himself.

It was much harder watching Jo ride off into the sunset with some other guy than he had thought it would be. Even one so obviously perfect for her. So obviously much better for her than he would be.
Cam stood and walked toward Jo, stopping just shy of her immediate orbit. The truth and a lie wrestled in his mouth until they both escaped through tight lips, sounding exactly the same.

“I’m glad.”

“He asked me out again tomorrow.” She tilted her head, considering him like a misbehaving theorem.

“Should I go?”

Cam refused his face what it wanted—to frown, scowl, furrow, squeeze his displeasure out through each feature. Instead he freeze-dried all his emotions for later and blanked his expression.

“I can’t tell you what to do.”

Jo searched his face with those eyes, the color of the moon and as omniscient. So like Ms. Kris’s eyes. Not the color or the shape, but gifted with true sight. Insight. In her wisdom, surely Ms. Kris had seen the darkness that even now threatened to swallow Cam whole, but she had loved him in spite of it. And Jo had those eyes, too, only something had changed since he had so deliberately hurt her in New York with Etty. Something in Jo’s heart was dying a slow but certain death. Probably the misplaced affection she’d held on to for years. He wasn’t sure if he wanted to place a pillow over its head or give it mouth-to-mouth. Kill or save. Alive or dead, it threatened his peace of mind.

Review: The Color of Heaven by Julianne MacLean

Series: The Color of Heaven series book 1
    Publisher: Blue Ocean
    Publication date: Jan 23, 2011
    Genre: Mainstream Contemporary Fiction
    Rating: 3 Stars

Sophie Duncan is a successful columnist whose world falls apart after her daughter's unexpected illness and her husband's shocking affair. When it seems nothing else could possibly go wrong, her car skids off an icy road and plunges into a frozen lake. There, in the cold, dark depths of the water, Sophie experiences something profound and extraordinary--something that unlocks the secrets from her past, and teaches her what it means to truly live.

"The good things comes in waves, along with the bad."

    My Review:

While I really LOVE Julianne's historical romances, this book was a new venture for me. I think this is the longest it's taken me to read a book. part of that is I was reading at work, but normally if I'm really into a book I can't put it down.  It's definitely not a romance but more of an inspirational novel. It's a story about survival. How we can endure the tragedies in our lives and still have our happy endings.  It's very emotional and deals with some heavy situations.

I normally don't read first person viewpoints so that was a bit of a turn off to me. When I read I want to know what everyone is thinking and feeling. In some novels it works and I can see why this was written in that viewpoint, but I felt uncomfortable reading this one. The characters lacked depth to me. There was so much potential but somehow it just read like a list of events. Yes it had emotional aspects, the tragedy of her daughter passing, being one, but it just felt like it could be more somehow. Some of the word choices you could tell come from Julianne's Canadian background although the story was set in Chicago and Boston for the most part. "Making grade" just confused me, maybe it's the Southerner in me though. Do Northerners say that? I'll have to ask my husband :)

Sophie is supposed to be the person the novel is about but I felt that it was her mother, Cora, whose story was the predominant one. I was confused for 3/4 of the book but when one detail was brought out it cleared up most of it.

This could definitely be a book club read. I still have so many questions running through my head after this. It's certainly a book that encourages you to think about life in a new way.

Historical Romance Review: The Devil Takes a Bride by Julia London

    Publisher: Harlequin
    Publication date: Jan 27th 2015
    Genre: Historical Romance
    Rating: 4 Stars
    Source: NetGalley

    A plan born of desperation…

Once the toast of society, Grace Cabot and her sisters now await the shame of losing high status and fine luxuries upon the death of the Earl of Beckington. The dire circumstances are inevitable unless, of course, Grace's wicked plot to seduce a wealthy viscount into marriage goes off without a single hitch. But once a stolen embrace with the wrong man leads her to be discovered in the arms of Geoffrey, the Earl of Merryton, her plan takes a most unexpected—and scorching—twist.

    …and altered by passion.

Governed by routine and ruled by duty, Geoffrey had no desire for a wife before he succumbed to Grace's temptation. Though his golden-haired, in-name-only bride is the definition of disorder, he can't resist wanting her in every way. But once her secrets meet his, society might consider their lives to be ruined beyond repair…while Geoffrey might just see it as a new beginning.

    My Review:

If I say anything at all about this book, I have to say BRAVO! to Julia London! It starts off a traditional historical romance but with the lady 'rogue' entrapping the lord, and then twists to a sensational story!

Grace needs to wed to save her family from ruin, or so she thinks. Her mother is going mad due to a head injury, her stepbrother is marrying and Grace and her sister Honor (from prev book)believe they are on the verge of being homeless.

Grace seeks to entrap a young flirt who professed to like her. The young flirt slips her trap and his elder, stuffy brother falls into Grace's trap. Caught 'in flagrante' in each others arms, Jeffery, Lord Merryton, is almost accused of the attempted rape of Grace. Grace is horrified and feeling guilty, accepts his very proper proposal of marriage.

Jeffery, a Lord with a sever case of OCD, a habit of counting to 8 and a high level of social anxiety, loses control when he kisses Grace. He's scared and ashamed and awfully shy. He's also a very kinky alpha hero! ;) Yes, there are slight BDSM tendencies in this novel. BDSM in a historical not to your liking, you think? What Evs!! It's HOT! There isn't much detail, it does get glossed over but we know it's happening and the sex scenes scorch!

I'm in love with this IMPERFECT COUPLE!! Neither can say they are perfect but they ARE perfect for each other! With Jefferies' eccentricities and Grace's impulsiveness they balance each other out! Grace shows Jeffery that even though he'll never be perfect by societies standards, he can still be loved for who and what he is. (What he is, is DELICIOUS!)

P.S. I wanted to smack his younger brother BADLY.

Julia London is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of more than thirty novels, including the Homecoming Ranch contemporary series, the Secrets of Hadley Green historical romance series, and numerous other works. She is a four-time finalist for the prestigious RITA Award for excellence in romantic fiction, and RT Bookclub award recipient for Best Historical Romance.  She lives in Austin, Texas.

Too bad his heart has other ideas . . .away...

At thirteen years old, Jo had fantasized about her first kiss. In her mind, it would be with Cam. She had practiced on her pillow and French-kissed her hand. She had positioned herself just so during Spin the Bottle, but Cam’s bottle had never landed on her. He’d never even hinted that he’d wanted to kiss her, that he fantasized about her, too. So all she’d had were daydreams. And in those daydreams, Cam nibbled at her lips. Slipped his tongue into her mouth, shy as she was. He was gentle and careful.

    This was not that kiss.

This kiss was made of sweet smoke and embers. It sizzled on her lips and seared her senses until she could only feel and taste and touch and see him. The whole universe whittled down to this man completely possessing her with a kiss. Sucking her tongue into his mouth. Pulling her lips between his teeth for tantalizing bites.

Cam walked them backward with slow, measured steps until he eased onto the bench, never leaving space between their mouths. He pulled her bare legs to either side of his hips, pressing against her back until her breasts were crushed against his chest. He lowered his head, nudging the straps of her camisole aside with his lips and sucking on her naked shoulder. Jo moaned, tipping her head back until her hair rained between her shoulder blades. Cam pushed the camisole down around her waist and pulled her breast into his greedy mouth. With every pull of his lips and tongue, she rolled her hips against him, a steady, sensual syncopation that shoved Jo over the edge. She took shelter against his chest, gripping his neck, huffing hot air into the collar of his shirt. Her thighs tightened around his hips, and her body released in shivers and whimpers and shudders.

She stilled little by little, falling against him, limp and pliant. Cam pushed her hair behind her shoulders, raining kisses over her collarbones and nipples until they peaked and begged for his mouth again. He suckled at her, sliding his hands inside her shorts, squeezing her butt and urging her against him.

    “Cam, I just—”

“I know.” He looked up, anointing her nipples with his words. “It was the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen. I want it again and again and again.”
